Edict is the excellent Japanese-to-English dictionary from Jim Breen’s Edict project at Monash University. Japanese Language Tools (JLT) has heavily customized it so that it also works well as an English-to-Japanese dictionary as well. JLT’s version of Edict has about 130,000 Japanese > English entries and about 180,000 English > Japanese entries. PlaySay's products are the best for Japanese audio study, particularly for all levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
Now, PlaySay Inc. and Japanese Language Tools bring all these resources together in the Edict PlaySay Audio To Go Companion. It’s got all the great features of JLT’s customized version of Edict plus a truly special one: for each Japanese word in Edict that’s represented in the PlaySay JLPT levels 1-4 vocabulary study sets, simply tap or click a link and you’ll automatically hear the word pronounced. The PlaySay JLPT vocabulary sets cover over 8000 of the most essential Japanese words, so a dictionary that can help you pronounce these words is a tremendous resource.
Just one example: the common words “hashi” (“bridge”) and “hashi” (“chopsticks”) are written the same in hiragana, but the stress pattern and tonality are noticeably different, something a regular dictionary won’t even make you aware of. But with the Edict PlaySay Audio companion, you can learn how to distinguish them and say them properly, right from the start!
The Edict PlaySay Audio To Go Companion will currently run on Windows computers (all flavors, as long as you’ve enabled Japanese support) and on Windows Mobile handheld devices (Japanese-language versions of WM2003SE, WM5, and WM6 with a touch screen—non-Japanese versions don’t support Japanese). You can immediately download everything you need from your PlaySay downloads page upon purchase of PlaySay's Full JLPT 1 - 4 Audio mp3 Vocabulary Set: for Windows you’ll just need to download a free program (EBWin), and for Windows Mobile you’ll need to download a program (EB Pocket Professional) and buy a license for it.
Alternatively, you can buy a top-of-the-line PDA (VGA screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.) with the Edict PlaySay Audio Companion and other dictionaries already installed and running from Japanese Language Tools. You’ll even have the choice of a system with an English-language OS customized to offer full Japanese support (Chinese and Korean support, too, if you like). For customers who’ve already bought PlaySay's Full JLPT 1 - 4 Audio mp3 Vocabulary Set, JLT will install the Edict PlaySay Audio Companion for no extra charge with purchase of the complete JLT PDA system (once your purchase is verified through PlaySay).
